Practicing Trust

Dear Reader,

After several hours of hilling potatoes and plucking garlic scapes, I paused to write this week's letter. The visible results, so satisfying, led me to test my physical limits. The much-welcome gusts of wind, in contrast to the previous day's oppressive heat, signaled a storm brewing somewhere, so symbolic of our current times.

I’ve tended the garlic beds since late October, and the potatoes just since early May, but the anticipation of the bounty to come is equal. It takes every bit of self-control as I move soil up the beds not to dig in and see what’s going on. That need to see what comes next is conditioned, and my nervous system longs to react by taking action. It takes some resiliency to resist the urge because, in truth, we all have a low tolerance for not knowing what comes next. And yet we can't know. And so, the cultivated quality of trust is needed, allowing me to pause, acknowledge my urge, and yet not let it dictate my actions.

You might guess I am talking about more than potatoes, but they certainly provide a poignant example and a way for me to practice and build up my trust muscles. In this literal example, I need to trust that the potatoes are doing what potatoes do, that I would notice if they were in distress, and that, in truth, I'll be okay regardless. It seems to me that individually building up our trust muscles might be an appropriate current action, as we are further called to trust our inner guidance and serve the greater good.

My circle of trust is smaller yet deeper than it's ever been. A tool that has helped me get there is my study of wisdom systems, and Astrology is just one. The planetary forces are more predictable than the weather report, and Astrology is not dogmatic or prescriptive. The energy just is, and I can decide how I wish to meet it, with fear or trust. This leads to the fact that yesterday, at 10:43 PM ET on June 20th, the sun reached its most northern point on the celestial equator, and together we experienced the turn of the seasons. It didn't matter where or who you were in the world, your financial status, religious or political beliefs, the Sun's new cycle began on time, equitably for all.

There are few remaining equitably shared experiences today that have not been co-opted by commercialism, journalists, influencers, or those striving for power; however, nature’s cyclical patterns remain pure, real, and true. Why is this important? Because in a noisy world where truth has become obscure, there are two places you can count on to be genuinely honest—the natural world and your essence or inner voice.

Despite our many large and small differences and disagreements, we will all unite in experiencing the longest day (or longest night if in the Southern Hemisphere) of the year. Throughout history, this day has signified an opportunity for enlightenment and clarity, as well as a new beginning. It is a time to honor the light within and the light within others. While it sounds like a far cry from what is being played out on the world stage, the invitation is there to meet the energy available for personal transformation. June 20th also marks the Sun’s entrance into Cancer Season, a period of four weeks that supports your ability to come into alignment with your truth and build your BIG dream in intentional incremental steps.

I have two recorded conversations that I am pleased to share with you today, which delve deeper into these themes. In Exploring the Sun Transits through Gates 15 & 52, Lois, Christine, and I look closely at the next ten days. I realize the concept of Sun Transits remains abstract for many. Yet, there is no better time to begin tracking your emotional patterns, including conditioned reactions like mine with the potatoes, than now. Cancer season encourages and upholds your efforts. Track with the Sun or track with the Moon, but become aware, take notice, of what and who do you trust. In cultivating this awareness, you preserve your sovereignty.

In this second recording, we dive into Cancer season with the guidance of Ukrainian Astrologer, Anastasiia Koryttseva. This recording offers the bonus of a high-level world view, a glimpse at the outer planetary changes that are underway, as well as a summary of the three distinct periods of Cancer season. There is quite a bit packed into just one hour, so be sure to use the time stamp in the description to guide your listening. Your comments on these recordings are always so welcome.

Please be assured that I will continue working on my potatoes and garlic, building my trust muscles and more, as this message lands in your inbox.

Happy Solstice!

On this day, throughout the growing season, the guilds and gardens receive some very special love from our number one local fan, board member Alli Holte, and our multi-talented summer intern, Amiya Fornes-Sicama. These two women bring their positive energy and belief in something bigger than themselves each week through rain, bugs, humidity, and oppressive heat. A few times a month, we also enjoy...

We need not avoid our active lives, but simply bring to them a new vision and shift of gravity. ~Sue Monk Kidd With arms full of crates, I made my way to the open car trunk in the rising heat of what promised to be another sultry day. Once relieved of my load, I paused momentarily to fact-check myself. What had begun as a joy-filled morning of flower and herb harvesting had shifted into a drive to complete a mission. Tension stretched across my...

Bodegold Chamomile, Matricaria recutita

Albert Einstein Dear Reader, The row of Bodegold Chamomile intercropped with onions was long overdue for a first cutting. It's nearly unimaginable that something so dainty and small could carry such potent medicinal gifts. The sweet lemony scent penetrated the air as I filled my basket. I wondered how this simple yet profoundly soothing sensory experience could be...
