Consider the Small

It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.

Albert Einstein

Dear Reader,

The row of Bodegold Chamomile intercropped with onions was long overdue for a first cutting. It's nearly unimaginable that something so dainty and small could carry such potent medicinal gifts. The sweet lemony scent penetrated the air as I filled my basket. I wondered how this simple yet profoundly soothing sensory experience could be shared with all who are suffering in the world today. Like a comforting embrace, this German variety of Chamomile extends exactly the support needed, delivering peace to the irritable, cooling the inflamed, and calming the nervous. It couldn’t be a more perfect prescription for the world today.

Imagine the possible outcome if we could all pause for one single moment in time and sip a freshly brewed cup of chamomile tea in union. A different way of being might arise in those precious few minutes. It is never easy to be the first in the crowd to step out of the teeth-gnashing angst and helpless overwhelm. It takes courage to be the first bird to take flight. But then, someone is always the first. Why not you?

Sometimes, the most compassionate path to take is the one that leads away from the others and where you've grown comfortable. That path might require some surveillance to find. It most certainly isn't just off the beaten trail. You must go slow and perhaps even retrace your most recent steps. Yes, now do you see it? To your right, the entrance appears deserted in the overgrowth, so very unlike what you were seeking. Go on, take a few steps in, let yourself wander, and wonder, you won't be alone for long.

On Sunday, the 13th of July, the Sun, the brightest force viewed from Earth, begins its transit through Gate 62. Small Exceeding or Preponderance of Small is the English translation of the I Ching hexagram 62. The energy available over the next 5.5 days supports your taking small steps beyond boundaries you hadn’t dared cross. In Hilary Barrett’s translated text, she refers to this period as a good time to become like the humble traveler, crossing over great mountains. There is no need to overreach your abilities; instead, fly close to the ground, paying close attention to details. It is productive to scale down your aspirations, do small works, and continue onwards.

So I ask you, my friends, what might you scale down to be more in alignment with your nature, and what small steps will you dare to take? Perhaps you can brew a cup of chamomile tea while you ponder this important question and see what clarity arrives with each sip.

Field Notes from Lauren

I began expressing my big Cancer emotions through writing at a very young age. For me, the unique act of writing is what allows me to process and evolve fully . Today, my weekly missives follow themes that weave between the literal fields of my work in the Gemmo Forest, our family homestead garden, and the energy field we all experience. My life now follows the rhythm of the land. From spring through fall, I can be found outdoors, hands in the dirt, working alongside her husband, Joachim, to tend our 7,500-square-foot family garden or with local volunteers caring for Gemmo Forest. When the cold sets in and the fields rest, I return indoors, where I rekindle my love of writing by the wood stove, always with my faithful calico, Ruby, curled close by.
